’Together Makes Great Happen’ was inspired by the community of creatives living and working in the area, designed to encapsulate the neighbourhood spirit and energy that exists in Fish Island, Hackney Wick. Wanting to create a bespoke and original piece of artwork to celebrate the opening of Monier Place, Peabody commissioned renowned local artists, Stephen Kenny and Daniel Heath to create something special and unique. Something that not only represents their own interpretation of togetherness, but also celebrates the local area and captures the vibrant, energetic and creative spirit of Fish Island and what it means to them.
For Stephen and Daniel, their interpretation takes inspiration from the natural environment. Exploring the relationships that exist between nature and the partnerships that are completely co-dependent on each other. As their ideas began to take shape, they looked at the plight of the bees, exploring how natural habitats need to be rich in flora and fauna to allow for pollination, relying on various parts of nature to come together in the food chain. Much like the thriving community that exists in Fish Island today.
One of the most important factors for both artists was the need for the artwork to tell a story and bring meaning behind the work to make it symbolic to the opening of the new development. The design highlights the cool vibrancy of the local area as an epicentre for artists and creatives while respecting its heritage as a factory town with industrial roots.
Stephen Kenny is a letterpress designer and printer using woodblocks from the 1830’s through to 1940 and traditional techniques and processes. Stephen had his very first studio in Hackney Wick and returned to the area four years ago having formed a strong emotional connection to the creative hub.
Daniel Heath is an award winning designer known for his illustrative, engaging and contemporary designs. Daniel upholds the principles of craftsmanship and sustainable design to create bespoke, hand printed wallpapers and crafted interior surfaces. Working in Fish Island Village allows Daniel the opportunity to be surrounded by other likeminded creatives.
